When you think of the sport hockey, you probably have images of large men on ice skating rinks using sticks to hurl pucks into goals. Actually, though, there are a few different types of hockey. Ladies field hockey, for example, does not use ice or pucks. Instead, they play on turf fields and use balls to score goals. Some men and women also play a version of the sport that uses inline roller skates, especially in areas where ice rinks are not easy to find. These people often play on a blacktop. Just like there are many versions of the sport, there are also many different hockey clubs, so you want to be sure that you join one that is right for you. When you contact the clubs, ask them what types of rinks or fields they use. Ask them how they make their teams as well so that you do not have young men playing alongside older women. If you are interested in playing a certain position, such as the net goalie, then you should ask them if they have any teams with this position open. If the club has a team that you can join, then you should ask them what types of game play they can offer you. Some clubs are members of larger organizations that give them access to tournaments, competitions, and minor league events. Ask the team if they have ever won any awards to help you gauge their level of experience. Finally, ask them about game fees and membership dues to determine if joining is worth it.

Hockey is any of a family of sports in which two teams compete by trying to maneuver a ball or hard round disc into the opponent's net or goal, using a stick. The two main types of hockey are field hockey and ice hockey. Field hockey is played with a small, hard round ball on a field of grass, gravel or artificial turf. Ice hockey is played on ice with a small, 7- to 9-ounce rubber disc called a puck, by players wearing ice skates. Ice hockey is typically played in regions with a colder climate. People who enjoy playing hockey often join hockey clubs where they can play on a team.
